From Cancer to Kilimanjaro – Karen Shearsmith’s challenge.

August 13th, 2010

For “Breakthrough Breast Cancer” (Charity Reg. No. 1062636 (England & Wales) SCO39058 (Scotland))

About Karen Shearsmith

Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in December 2007 & after undergoing three surgeries (ending in a mastectomy), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a year of Herceptin and with reconstruction still to come, Karen Shearsmith has set herself the bigger challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in October this year to raise funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. To this end she is organising several fun events locally in the hope that all you kind people out there will sponsor her while having fun yourselves!
In Karen’s own words: ‘Apart from raising much needed funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, you will be helping me fulfil a personal challenge. I want to stand at the top of a mountain and shout ‘‘I did it, I’m alive!!’’….. Thank you to all of you in advance for your kind support.’ – Karen xx
Karen’s target for this campaign is to raise £3400 and so far she has raised £2500 through a variety of fundraising events including running a half-marathon in March.

The Malt Shovel Tavern event – 29th August

The next event on Karen’s ‘From Cancer to Kilimanjaro Campaign’ is to be a live music afternoon at ‘The Malt Shovel Tavern’ on the afternoon of 29th August 2010.

Mike & Roz Evans (owners of the Malt Shovel Tavern in Northampton) got to hear of Karen’s challenge to climb Kilimanjaro over a pint of real ale in their award winning Camra Pub of the Year (2010) and suggested that a Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon with good ale, music & company would be a good forum to raise some much needed funds. To this end they have booked ‘Accrington Stanley,’ a popular band locally and regular performers at The Malt Shovel Tavern to perform from about 2.30pm. There is no entry fee but Karen is hoping to organise a raffle and, of course, donations will be gratefully received during the afternoon!

Karen flies out to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on 22nd October and starts her ascent on 24th, hopefully reaching the summit on 27th-28th October.

For further information or to make a donation please contact either ‘The Malt Shovel Tavern’ on 01604 234212 or www.maltshoveltavern.com, or, Karen on 07886978458.

The campaign so far

Previous to her ‘From Cancer to Kilimanjaro Campaign’ Karen has already raised over £4000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and subsequently has recently attended the unveiling of the 4th Challengers Wall at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research, where scientists work to develop pioneering new breast cancer treatments.

Through this work the charity believes passionately that breast cancer can be beaten and the fear of the disease removed for good. Find more information at http://breakthrough.org.uk

About breast cancer

• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK – nearly 46,000 women and around 300 men are diagnosed every year.
• Breast cancer accounts for nearly 1 in 3 of all female cancers and one in nine women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime.
• More than 1,000 women die of breast cancer every month in the UK.
• The good news is that more women than ever in the UK are surviving breast cancer thanks to better awareness, better treatments and better screening.
